Just –
Either poorly written directions or device is not intuitive, but probably both. Also, if you have any hearing difficulty/loss the volume is poor. Also, this device is not delivered to APO addresses so actually had to order stateside and carry back overseas with me. Every other Finis product has been great so I feel very strongly about this review.

This is the only trainer you will find. It is patented as such and does a great job while it is working.
It breaks… sometimes faster sometimes much slower. maybe it s the humidity… maybe it is the stars.
There won’t be refunds or repairs… at least I havent seen any.
How long will it last…? I am happy if my new order goes above the 6month mark.
Shortest I have seen a friend use it for was 3 days.
Would give 5 stars if they could be repaired.

I have used this for well over a year, averaging about 4 times a week in the lap pool. It took me about a year to figure out that if I lace a small tie-wrap through the tie-downs that it will not only stay in place but also be much more audible via bone-conduction. When I worn it without using the tie-downs, it would work out of position making the beeps hard or impossible to hear, and eventually tear loose from the google strap. I use a dedicated pair of googles for this product, so affixing it with a tie-wrap was not a problem. I use it for 1/2-interval timing for RPT, so I set if for ~7 seconds and it works great.

Love these! as a swim coach tempo is crucial to keeping speed or to work on timing out a stroke. I have all my kids purchase these for the season. This is completely water resistant (unless the battery isn’t closed properly, its easy to do it right). If it breaks for non user error issues, I have never had an issue getting a replacement with the company. There are 3 modes for training. I usually use the first mode which is pretty exact to a metronome. It is great to help kids with fly or breaststroke, kick timing for free. My only recommendation is that you don’t put the item directly on your ear. You’ll hear it in the water if it simply in your cap. Trust me.

I’ve reviewed these tempo trainers after having a bunch in 2014-2017 that really worked poorly. I decided to buy another one because I need them to do the Swim Smooth workouts that I like for long distance training. Lo and behold, I’ve had two now for around 2 years and they haven’t broken. I use them all the time. No idea if the earlier ones were poorly made and they improved the quality, or if it’s just the universe responding to my past tempo trainer pain. Whatever it is, it’s going well. I like to have two on hand in case one breaks (bad memories from earlier years). Just a tip from a pro 🙂

So my Ironman coach had me pick this up. The interface is a little clunky but one you get the hang of it it’s easy to use. I recommend throwing the manual in the garbage and just going to YouTube. (The manual is a novel and reads terribly.) Basically there are three modes–I’ve only used modes 1 and 2, but essentially you are either “beating the beep” or “staying with the beep”. It fits snugly under your swim cap and there are only a few buttons so hitting reset during a set is painless. *Important: to use this effectively you’ll need to figure out your base swim average pace which is done by swimming a 400 all out and a 100 all out and then averaging your per 100 time.

I hesitated to buy this device for several years because of the price. I tried a friend’s first and on my first swim we able to go faster and farther than ever before because of the pacing. Truly a game changer for me. If you are considering this or just need some help with your swim times, I highly recommend this trainer. Easy to use. All I do is drop one number from my pacing every 2-3 swims and I’m getting faster.
